You have to go to Folder Options and uncheck Hide Extensions for Known File Types. There is always a possibility that you rename a file and overwrite the file extension - thereby, leaving it with no extension. It seemed to only affect Firefox while it was running I could not open another window by clicking on desktop icon but I could open another window from within FF itself. The good news is, I was able (eventually!) to reset my PC.
